Il offre une ligne plus \u00e9l\u00e9gante, un espace int\u00e9rieur accru et une excellente maniabilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;ai test\u00e9 le prototype arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Knoxville, dans le Tennessee, directement du centre de d\u00e9veloppement de Sea Ray \u00e0 Merritt Island, en Floride. Confier l&rsquo;acc\u00e8s \u00e0 bord du premier exemplaire \u00e0 un journaliste est audacieux, mais les investissements de Sea Ray en recherche et d\u00e9veloppement ont port\u00e9 leurs fruits. La coque du 420, en revanche, ne pr\u00e9sentait aucune imperfection ni porosit\u00e9 au niveau des angles. La couleur \u00e9tait d&rsquo;un bleu profond et uniforme, quel que soit l&rsquo;endroit o\u00f9 mon regard se posait ou sous le soleil intense du Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>Ce souci du d\u00e9tail \u00e9tait \u00e9galement manifeste sur le poste de pilotage du 420, qui pr\u00e9sente des angles complexes que d&rsquo;autres constructeurs pourraient \u00e9viter en raison du co\u00fbt suppl\u00e9mentaire des moules et des probl\u00e8mes de stratification. Le 420 ne pr\u00e9sentait aucun d\u00e9faut de gelcoat.<\/p>\n<p>Sous le pont, le 420 offre des passages plus larges que le 410. Sea Ray a \u00e9galement supprim\u00e9 le r\u00e9frig\u00e9rateur\/cong\u00e9lateur vertical, con\u00e7u une salle d&rsquo;eau spacieuse \u00e0 l&rsquo;arri\u00e8re de la cuisine et positionn\u00e9 la banquette\/couchette de la cabine arri\u00e8re de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 ce que les occupants puissent converser avec toute personne install\u00e9e sur la banquette du carr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab L\u2019un des principaux objectifs \u00e9tait d\u2019accro\u00eetre l\u2019espace int\u00e9rieur de la cabine \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Fafard.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019impression d\u2019espace m\u2019a imm\u00e9diatement frapp\u00e9 en descendant dans le cockpit, tout comme les hublots int\u00e9gr\u00e9s \u00e0 la coque du 420, qui se trouvaient sur le roof du 410. Ceci accentue non seulement les lignes ext\u00e9rieures fluides et dynamiques du 420, mais permet \u00e9galement d\u2019am\u00e9nager davantage de rangements au-dessus des hublots. Le nouveau mod\u00e8le dispose \u00e9galement d\u2019un puits de lumi\u00e8re fixe au plafond du carr\u00e9, occultable par un store. L\u2019effet \u00e9tait du plus bel effet, en harmonie avec les tons neutres et doux de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur et les touches de cerisier.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 noter \u00e9galement : le t\u00e9l\u00e9viseur\/magn\u00e9toscope combin\u00e9 de 20 pouces de s\u00e9rie (un \u00e9cran plat et un lecteur DVD sont disponibles en option), ainsi que la couchette centrale de la cabine avant avec matelas \u00e0 ressorts, les penderies s\u00e9par\u00e9es et la salle d\u2019eau privative avec douche s\u00e9par\u00e9e. Ici, comme dans le reste du bateau, une main courante \u00e9tait plac\u00e9e exactement l\u00e0 o\u00f9 je la tendais.<\/p>\n<p>Compar\u00e9 au 410, le 420 est \u00e9quip\u00e9 d\u2019un moteur V-drive de 450 ch. Les moteurs Cummins sont l\u00e9g\u00e8rement avanc\u00e9s, ce qui rapproche le centre de gravit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;axe m\u00e9dian du bateau. Combin\u00e9 \u00e0 la largeur accrue, cela garantit une excellente maniabilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de mon essai sur la rivi\u00e8re Tennessee (j&rsquo;admets, un terrain d&rsquo;essai peu adapt\u00e9 pour un bateau de 12,80 m\u00e8tres), le 420 a d\u00e9marr\u00e9 rapidement et a d\u00e9jaug\u00e9 autour de 1\u00a0800 tr\/min. En poussant le moteur \u00e0 son r\u00e9gime maximal puis en le r\u00e9duisant, nous avons maintenu le d\u00e9jaugeage \u00e0 16 n\u0153uds et 1\u00a0600 tr\/min. Cela signifie que l&rsquo;on peut fendre un clapot court et r\u00e9gulier sans atteindre des vitesses inconfortables. M\u00eame la grande plateforme de bain n&rsquo;a pas eu tendance \u00e0 coller \u00e0 l&rsquo;eau.<\/p>\n<p>Le bateau \u00e9tait pr\u00e9cis et r\u00e9actif dans ses virages. Nous avons atteint une vitesse de pointe de 32 n\u0153uds avec sept personnes \u00e0 bord, sans \u00e9quipement de croisi\u00e8re. She \u2018s powered by twin Cummins 6CTA 8.3L 450hp diesel engines and V-drives. Simple elegance and easy maintenance abound with a wealth of instrumentation and information is at the captain&rsquo;s fingertips, The beautiful, yet efficient, galley includes a host of conveniences that will make each on-the-water excursion thoroughly enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Yachting Magazine wrote about the newest addition to the incomparable line of Sea Ray Yachts, upon the model\u2019s debut at the Miami Boat Show of that year.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Some builders regurgitate the same designs and say a new d\u00e9cor package or a hardtop is worthy of a new model nomenclature. With such boats, there\u2019s not much to evaluate beyond what\u2019s in the head or how many drawers are in the galley. It\u2019s as if you are expected to make a buying decision based solely on the amount of stowage or the inclusion of a VacuFlush MSD.<\/p>\n<p>Having tested a few of these warmed-over designs, I found the new Sea Ray 420 Sundancer a treat. This new express model is more than a tweaking of the 410 Sundancer she replaces. She offers a sleeker look, improved interior space and good handling.<\/p>\n<p>I tested the prototype that arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee, direct from Sea Ray\u2019s product development facility in Merritt Island, Florida. Allowing an editor aboard hull number one is bold, but Sea Ray\u2019s investments in research and development paid off. Our test boat suffered none of the hull number one symptoms so often found on fresh launches. There were no awkward corners, no bad vibrations, no issues of failing to meet speed goals, no evidence of bad finish.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, more companies that should not, do. But the lack of issues on the prototype 420 speaks to the benefits of a company such as Sea Ray, which develops each model with input from the sales, marketing, engineering and production departments, then creates each boat on a line that allows little variation in quality and standards.<\/p>\n<p>The 420\u2019s profile is a variation of the 410\u2019s and incorporates the same sleek, rounded lines of the redesigned 550 Sundancer. I\u2019m a sucker for the dark blue hull, which makes this boat pop alongside her paler siblings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the hull was on the line, we were all a little unsure, said Robert Denney, who works at Sea Ray\u2019s product research department. \u201cBut when the deck was put on and she was launched, it was great.<\/p>\n<p>Some builders forgo offering dark hull colors because they disrupt the line and hide no sins. The 420\u2019s hull, however, showed no print-through or porosity around the corners. It was a consistent deep blue no matter where I looked or where the intense Tennessee sun beamed down.<\/p>\n<p>This attention to detail was also evident on the 420\u2019s helm deck, which has some complicated corners other builders may avoid because of the extra mold cost and layup issues. The 420 showed no gelcoat flaws.<\/p>\n<p>Belowdecks, the 420 has wider passages than the 410. Sea Ray also removed the upright refrigerator\/freezer, designed a generously sized head abaft the galley, and positioned the after cabin\u2019s settee\/berth so occupants can converse with anyone on the saloon settee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the main premises was to increase room inside the cabin, Fafard said.<\/p>\n<p>The sense of space caught my attention when I walked below, as did the ports in the 420\u2019s hull side that were in the 410\u2019s coachroof. This not only accentuates the 420\u2019s flowing, aggressive exterior lines, but allows for more cabinets in the overhead area above the ports. The new model also has a fixed skylight overhead in the saloon that can be masked with a shade. The effect was pleasing combined with the interior\u2019s soft neutral tones and cherry accents.<\/p>\n<p>Also worth noting are the standard 20-inch television\/VCR combo (a flat screen and DVD are optional), and the forward cabin\u2019s island berth with innerspring mattress, his-and-her hanging lockers and private head with separate shower. Here, as in the rest of the boat, there was a handrail exactly where I found myself reaching.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the 410, the 420\u2019s V-drive 450 hp Cummins are slightly forward, which moves the center of gravity slightly closer to the boat\u2019s midline. Combined with the increased beam, this means very good handling.<\/p>\n<p>During my test on the Tennessee River (I admit, hardly an appropriate testing ground for a 42-foot boat), the 420 popped out of the hole quickly and rose to a plane around 1800 rpm. Taking her to the maximum rpm and then backing down, we maintained a plane to 16 knots and 1600 rpm. This means you can get on top of short, stacked chop without blazing at uncomfortable speeds. Even the large swim platform resisted the urge to stick to the water.<\/p>\n<p>She was tight and responsive when turning within her own wake. We reached a top speed of 32 knots with seven people on board, but no cruising gear. Expect a cruising speed around 25 knots.<\/p>\n<p>Other noteworthy features include a U-shape settee abaft the helm with table and cup holders. My preference on an express boat is to have an L-shape settee, elevated and facing forward to let guests view their surroundings while cruising and to involve the captain in the conversation, but this design should make a nice party setting.<\/p>\n<p>At the helm, all necessary breakers were within reach and the line of sight was good from the helmsman\u2019s adjustable bucket seat. I suggest incorporating a center windshield wiper to ensure the same flawless line of sight during foul weather. A double helm seat for guests is outboard of the helm, and there is a wet bar with ice maker to port. The after portion of the deck and settee lift hydraulically to reveal the engineroom, which was neat and tidy with all systems accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Well built and damn good-looking, the 420 Sundancer is a worthy successor to the 410 and a good fit in Sea Ray\u2019s line.<\/p>\n<p>And by the way, she has ample stowage and a VacuFlush
