PURCHASE ADVICE (new or used)

Boaters sometimes ask us for advice when it comes time to choose a new boat, whether new or used.

Here are some important points or recommendations
(see tips) useful if you are in purchasing mode while not losing sight of the potential resale value of your next purchase:

– If the boat has a generator, it must be in a soundproof box (ideally, to considerably reduce noise).

– For boats with sterndrives from 2010 onwards with two engines, you should have a joystick for easy manoeuvring at the marina. Think about resale value. In 2020, a customer looking at the second-hand market will be interested in this feature, especially for boats under 45 feet, that’s for sure.

– From 50 feet or 2010, the presence of a gyroscope type stabilizer (SEAKEEPER OR QUICK) is almost mandatory for resale, especially by an American.

– Diesel engines are increasingly a reference from 35 feet. It’s difficult to resell a boat with gas engines that exceeds 650 hours. Whereas for diesels, no problem. European manufacturers have understood this for years.

– From 40 feet and even less, the presence of a patio door is a serious asset. Canvases are becoming less and less popular.

– In the cockpit area, a wetbar with a sink and a refrigerator is now essential and why not a grill as well.

– The mechanism (glendinning) which allows you to avoid handling the electrical cable to connect the boat to the dock is a very interesting gadget.

– The cleanliness of the engine compartment, carpets, canvases, toilets, bedrooms, etc.

– Check the hull fittings (water inlet under the hull) which supply water to the engine cooling systems, A/C, generator and the presence of stainer(s) with easy visual observation window, ( type of filter of various particles), are they easily accessible for maintenance and for a quick check…

– Is the power of the engines adapted to the weight of the boat?

– Is the swimming platform pleasant…

– If there is a hydraulic platform, is it original, that is to say installed by the boat manufacturer?

– The anchor compartment, a chain or rope, the length, etc.
