2010 Hylas 70 Center Cockpit
Frers Designed Flagship, Shoal Draft and Extensively Refit
When Hylas set out to build a flagship, the company went back to German Frers, whose designs built the brand's bluewater reputation, and to Queen Long Marine, the Taiwan yard that has built Hylas yachts for decades. The result was the Hylas 70: a center cockpit passagemaker with the comfort and range of a much larger yacht, built to ABS standards with an aramid reinforced hull, a solid lead keel, and watertight collision and stern compartments. It is a boat designed to cross oceans and to be lived aboard for months at a time.
Shearwater is the shoal draft version, and at 7’ 3” she reaches places most 70 footers never see, from the rivers of the Chesapeake to the shallow banks of the Bahamas. Since her current owner bought her in late 2022, she has had the kind of refit few yachts ever get:
All new electrical and electronics work was installed to ABYC standards, with references available on request. Inside, her 18 foot beam opens up four cabins and four heads finished in teak, bamboo and Corian.
For all her size, Shearwater is a remarkably easy yacht to run. Every winch is hydraulic, and push button controls in the cockpit work…

All new electrical and electronics work was installed to ABYC standards, with references available on request. Inside, her 18 foot beam opens up four cabins and four heads finished in teak, bamboo and Corian.
For all her size, Shearwater is a remarkably easy yacht to run. Every winch is hydraulic, and push button controls in the cockpit work the main, the furling genoa and staysail, and the windlass. The main drops neatly into its Stack Pack on lazy jacks, the vang and backstay adjust hydraulically from the cockpit, and joystick bow thruster controls at both helms take the stress out of docking. She is set up for an owner/operator couple to sail with confidence, while the aft guest cabin with its own head gives a hired captain or crew a private space for longer passages. At anchor, the lithium bank, solar array and DC watermaker keep the refrigeration running and the tanks full without hours of generator time.
